Working in the ‘WOS’ at Western

Maria Manthos

Have you heard of the ‘WOS’ Studio yet!?

‘WOS’ is the Western One Stop Studio, a space designed by the Digital Futures team here at Western where academic staff record material for their units of study – often in the format of a ‘lecture pod’ (a short video resource that can be shared to students). Rose, Varun and I aren’t academic staff but through our 21C Student Curriculum Partner roles, we got to record a short video today in the WOS Studio at our Parramatta South campus. A few weeks ago, the Rich Media team - Alan, Sebastian and Sam - showed us around the studio, explaining the features and letting us play with the equipment. Today, we went back prepared with a co-created script that communicates our excitement about being a SAP. Because we are about to recruit new 21C SAPs, we thought a snappy video introduction would be a good way of inviting applications. Through the magical work of the Rich Media team our script appeared on the teleprompter allowing us to record live in front of a camera.

I felt like I was walking in the shoes of one my teachers who I see so often on my screen at home when I watch lecture pods. It felt almost strange to be on the flip side!

My favourite part about being in the WOS Studio was learning about another pocket of the University that I didn’t know even existed! As a student, I tend to feel ‘in the dark’ about things happening around here (really cool things, by the way!) and by having a hands-on 'go', I feel that the University is being opened up to me! I look forward to uploading our video when it's ready.

If you don't know about the WOS, check out the website now.
